The year is 1959, you are a postman and you must deliver mail to a brand new town called Little Vale. Although the sun is shining and the birds are chirping, this town is shrouded in mystery. Something… unnatural is afoot here.

Factsheet

The Update

Get ready to experience the chilling horrors of Little Vale like never before! Helltown has been completely remastered with the Revival Update, featuring enhanced environments and animations, reimagined characters, new dialogues, and redesigned gameplay sections. But that's not all! Not only have the soundscapes been improved, but the game also features a spine-tingling soundtrack by no other than Ockeroid, composer of the fabulous Crow Country game!

New scares await you in this free update, but will you have the courage to face the terrors lurking in the shadows? Or be brave enough to play through the game's different endings? There's only one way to find out...

Platforms

The game is available on Steam and Itchi.io, but the update will be released on July 19th.

Release & Development

Helltown was originally released in 2017. It was our first game project, back when we were only two developers and was made during our spare time while attending university.

The Revival Update remasters several aspects of the original game and remakes others. We finally feel like the game can live up to our original ambitions and we're proud to release it for free to the players who already own Helltown. We hope a lot more players will dive into the twisted town of Little Vale!

Playtime

We estimate an average of 2 to 3 hours to reach the standard ending, but there are 4 other very different endings to unlock!

Gameplay

In Helltown, you play as a postman who has to deliver packages to the residents of a brand-new residential development called Little Vale. However, when all hell breaks loose, you'll have to run away and hide from insidious monsters while trying to unravel the truth behind it all. To do so, talk to the townspeople and explore the game's many locations. Will you be able to escape, or will you be another lost soul trapped in... Helltown?

The Revival Update introduces objects with physics, new interactions, and new gameplay segments along with revised level designs. The story has been completely reimagined and is now much more fleshed out. Townies have much more to say, some characters have been completely redesigned and cutscenes have been sprinkled throughout the experience.

Aesthetic & Inspirations

The game boasts crunchy pixels, crushed colors, and a dithering filter to evoque the wonderfully low-resolution graphics of the PS1 and PS2 era games. Our goal is to get close to the authentic look of these games while giving us some creative liberties in order to fully immerse the players in the twisted world of Helltown.

The first two Silent Hill games have been a big source of inspiration, both graphically and thematically, along with a few horror movie classics like Rosemary's Baby and Event Horizon. Indie darlings like the Faith Unholy Trilogy and Amnesia The Dark Descent have also been in our minds while developing the original as well as the update.

About us

We're a team of 4 French Canadians and Desk Deck Heroes will be our second big production! Last December, Born of Bread was released and published by Dear Villagers on PC, Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series S|X. It's a turn-based RPG inspired by the Paper Mario series featuring a flour golem destined to save the world from an ancient evil.

It was a challenging production, and while working on the sequel, Desk Deck Heroes, we decided to take a few weeks to work on the Revival Update for Helltown. Since the game originally came out in 2017 and we were very inexperienced back then, we felt it didn't live up to our initial vision. We found out we could drastically improve it in a reasonable amount of time and offer players a brand new experience full of scares and eerie wonders.
